MYSORE: Five persons, allegedly engaged as bonded labourers at a stone-cutting unit at Thoppanahalli village in Mandya district, were rescued on Monday. Superintendent of Police Kaushalendra Kumar told The Hindu over phone from Mandya that the operation to rescue the five, who were from Salem district in Tamil Nadu, was carried out jointly by the Salem district police and the Mandya police with support from the departments of Revenue and Labour, and a non-governmental organisation. Jagannath and Krishna, who were reportedly running the stone-cutting unit in Mandya, are absconding. Mr. Kumar said the five were allegedly engaged as bonded labourers at the unit for the last two to three years. They were rescued and taken to Salem, he added. Relative's plea “The Salem police sought our help to rescue the people. One of the relatives had filed a complaint with the Salem district authorities saying the five had been engaged in bonded labour, and appealed for their rescue,” the SP said.
