Gulbarga
GULBARGA: More than 46 per cent of specialist doctor posts in government general hospitals (GGHs) and community health centres (CHCs) in Gulbarga district are vacant. According to official sources in the district Health and Family Welfare Department, out of the 95 sanctioned posts of specialist doctors in 21 GGHs and CHCs in the district, only 52 posts have been filled. The remaining 43 are vacant despite many attempts to fill them and the Government offering high salaries. Acute Sources said that the shortage of gynaecologists, orthopaedists, dermatologists, ENT specialists and radiologists is particularly acute. Out of the 26 gynaecologist posts sanctioned in the district, 17 are vacant. Similarly, all the sanctioned posts of dermatologist (four), ENT (five), and radiologist (one) are vacant. Of the six orthopaedist posts, four are vacant; of the 10 general surgeon posts, three are vacant; of the 23 posts of specialist physician, 11 are vacant; and of the eight posts of paediatrician, two are vacant. Of the six posts of anaesthetist, two are vacant while three posts of ophthalmic surgeon out of six are vacant. Sources said that the demand for specialists and high salaries paid in private sector hospitals elsewhere in the State and in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra made it difficult for government hospitals to attract specialists.
