Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh Government on Monday exempted kerosene from value added tax and reduced the tax on diesel to 9.70 per cent from the present 14 per cent to provide relief to people from the recent hike in prices of petroleum products. There would be zero VAT on kerosene, a relief of 13.5 per cent, while reduction in VAT on diesel would be 4.30 per cent, an official spokesman said. The Central Government last weeknd raised the diesel price by Rs.3 a litre, kerosene by Rs.2 a litre and cooking gas by Rs.50 a cylinder following spike in international crude oil rates. States like Haryana and West Bengal had also reduced VAT on kerosene to give relief to common man from the fuel price hike. The State Cabinet decided to continue the Market Intervention Scheme for procurement of mangoes and fixed Rs.4.60 and Rs.5.25 per kg as procurement price for “seedling” and “grafted” varieties of mango for 2011. This scheme will be in operation from July 1 to August 15, and HPMC, HIMFED and HP Agro Industries Corporation will be designated procurement agencies buying mangoes at 34 mango fruit procurement collection centres. The Cabinet approved policy guidelines to provide compensation to farmers for damage to their crops during construction activities by hydro-electric projects in the State as relief and rehabilitation measure. It also decided to include one female member in the State Review Board constituted to consider cases relating to premature release and mercy petitions of prisoners and also consider cases relating to convicts undergoing life and short-term imprisonment. It approved four cases for premature release and two cases of mercy petition to forward the same to the Governor for approval. – PTI
