LUCKNOW: In a bid to tighten the law and order situation following recent incidents of crime against women, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Monday announced creation of three zones in the State which would be headed by senior police and administrative officers. Since the State would be divided into three zones and there are 18 divisions in the State, each zone would comprise six divisions. The proposed zones will be created in eastern, central and western UP and will be headed by officers of the rank of D-G Police and Principal Secretary. The announcement was made by the Chief Minister while addressing a law and order review meeting at Tilak Hall here on Monday. Ms. Mayawati directed that officials spend six days each month in their zones reviewing the law and order situation as well as the progress of development schemes. The officials have been asked to send their report to the government. Ms. Mayawati further announced that she will undertake surprise inspections to asses the law and order situation after the conclusion of the monsoon session of the State legislature in August. Addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister expressed dissatisfaction at the law and order situation, particularly vis-a-vis crime against women. To control crime against women and minor girls, she directed the officers in charge of all police stations to conduct a month-long campaign in July. She also directed the district magistrates to hold preparatory meetings at the district headquarters at 10 a.m. on June 29. These meeting would be attended by the SPs, SSPs, DIGs, DSPs, station in-charge and sub-divisional magistrates. She said the first information report in such cases should be registered without delay and stringent punishment meted out to the accused. The accused should be arrested within ten days and sent to jail, she added. More importantly, the Chief Minister instructed the officials that if any police personnel were found guilty of shielding the accused or found trying to frame an innocent person he should be promptly suspended. Campaign She said that during the month-long campaign in July all anti-social elements and characterless persons in each police station area should be identified and a list prepared. She instructed the officials that if a policeman is found involved in a crime against women he should be dismissed from service and sent to jail. Close vigil should also be kept on persons liable to destroy communal harmony in the State, she added. The law and order review meeting was attended by district magistrates, SPs, DIGs, IGs, commissioners and senior administrative and police officers.
