Shepherds union stages dharna on roads

Protest:District Shepherds' Union members staging a dharna in Karimnagar on Monday.

KARIMNAGAR: The Karimnagar district Shepherds Co-operative Union Limited members staged a massive dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Monday with demands such as increase of ex-gratia to the shepherd killed by an un-natural death from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 2 lakh.

The shepherds had been staging a sit-in dharna in front of the Collectorate since June 13. On Monday, they staged the dharna by squatting on the road obstructing traffic.

Union president K. Narsaiah Yadav said that they were demanding the government to release loans through NABARD without any collateral security to start sheep and goat rearing units.

He demanded that the government provide necessary medicines free of cost for sheeps and goats during outbreak of seasonal diseases. He also sought allocation of at least five acres of land to each sheep and goat co-operative unit in villages. He also sought pension for shepherds who have crossed the age of 60.
