Devotees to watch TVs while standing in queue

A total of 10 LCD television sets being installed at a cost

of Rs. 5 lakh

MADURAI: For the devotees standing in the winding queues for darshan at the Meenaksi Sundareswarar Temple here, there is good news that will help them during the waiting time. The temple authorities are installing a total of ten 32-inch LCD televisions for the benefit of devotees waiting in queues.

The devotees would be able to see pictures of presiding deity, festival schedules and puja time while they are moving in the lines, official sources told The Hindu here on Monday.

While one of the 10 TVs had been installed opposite the ‘Unchal Mandapam' and was already in operation, the rest would be installed in another 10 days.

More TV sets could come up later based on devotees' response.

The total project was being implemented at a total cost of Rs. 5 lakh. The entire project cost was being borne by donors. This 10 TVs are being installed in the free darshan line and paid ticket lines in the outer corridors of sanctum sanctorum near the Golden Lotus Tank.

The pictures of deities and other announcements on timings would be mounted on a pen drive and fixed into the TV.

This method prevented the need for additional wiring with the only effort being to switch the TV on or off.

The temple is contemplating connecting all TV sets to a centralised system through which instructions and announcements could be made in Tamil and English, sources said.

A top official said the temple opted for pictures rather than footage and clippings of temple festivals as devotees moving in queues would not be able to stand still till the footage got over. If the devotees were watching clippings of deities, it would help keep their thoughts on the deity.
