Coimbatore: It's official. The TNCA, the State's cricket body, has taken the District Cricket Association of Tirupur (DCAT) into its fold.

DCAT's Head N. Chandran was obviously delighted. “The TNCA expressed its happiness over our past performances and our organisational skills. And, that cleared the route for them to grant affiliation to our association.”

Perfect record

“It was a perfect record for us in the 2010-11 season. Despite the bad and threatening weather, we managed to complete all our league matches.

And, the teams showed exemplary sportsmanship and supported the association in a big way as well,” he added during the second annual day celebration at the TEA Public School grounds in Tirupur on Sunday.

He said the task ahead would be challenging. “Having got the affiliation, the expectations now will be pretty high. And, we will have to work accordingly. We will have to do one better from here.”

The DCAT is the 31st district to come under the State body's umbrella.

Deserving

It deserves a place over there as its members worked hard, and in a professional manner, over the past two years without expecting anything in return.

It also encouraged a number of schools in and around Tirupur.

“There are lots of good players in the district. That's the only reason we gave the boys an opportunity to play in the league matches. And, trust me, it was a big success,” said Mr. Chandran, and quickly pointed out that both schools and colleges extended its support in providing and maintaining grounds.

Ground

Mr. Chandran said the DCAT is on the hunt for grounds.

“If we get sufficient grounds then we will add one more division from the next season.”

The DCAT's chief patron A. Sivakumar said if the TNCA had accorded the affiliation it was because the association had strictly adhered to the rules.

He appreciated the efforts of its members and also urged them to tap talents at the rural pockets. “I hope the DCAT does that as they do not get the right opportunity to expose their skills.”

V. Balakrishnan, Superintendent of Police (Tirupur) said cricket incites the passion and brings people together.

“Mr. Chandran is the right choice to lead DCAT. I am pleased that the district has got its affiliation under his leadership.

Mr. N. Prakash, the DCAT Secretary, thanked Mr. N. Srinivasan, the TNCA president, and his team for the affiliation.

The DCAT remembered the services of the late G.R. Prasad, the CDCA secretary. “It was an irreparable loss to the cricketing community of the entire State, said Mr. Prakash.

Reward

Later, the DCAT rewarded the winners of the league, knockout, twenty20 and other school tournaments.

Mr. Balakrishnan and Mr. Sivakumar, the special guests for the day, gave away the prizes.
