‘Ban on tobacco sale laudable'

In response to Public Eye on “How effective is the smoking ban?” ( The Hindu, June 14), H. Madhusudhan Bhandarkar, writes: “The government's effort in enacting the law to ban sale of cigarettes and tobacco products within a vicinity of 100 yards from educational institutions is laudable. People found smoking in public places should be fined Rs. 500, which will be a deterrent. Passive smoking is a cause for cancer, which many people are not aware of. Habitual smokers and users of tobacco products like gutka can slowly bring down their consumption and then do away with the habit. Sheer will power is required for this. Counselling may help cut down smoking to a great extent as also reducing the consumption of tobacco products. Unless the law-enforcement agencies are strict in implementing the rule, it becomes difficult to control smoking in public spaces.
