Five youths held for racing
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: Five youths, who allegedly raced on their motorcycles endangering the safety of others on the road where arrested on Monday. They were produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody.
Based on specific information that some youths were frequently racing on their motorcycles on Kamarajar Salai, Elliots Beach area and East Coast Road, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-South) R. Sudhakar formed a special team to investigate.
“They were habitually indulging in racing for money. The person who reaches the destination first wins…they don't stop at signals and even enter the wrong lane and pedestrian platforms to win the bet. Any attempt to forcibly stop the youths could be dangerous as they ride in top speed. We followed and arrested them at different points when they slowed down due to traffic congestion,” Mr. Sudhakar said.
The team apprehended Thameem Ansari (22) of Netaji Nagar in Tondiarpet, Ashiq Ahmed (18) of Mannadi, Azharuddin (19) of Seven Wells, Sanuraj (21) of Mangalapuram and Thameem Ansari (24) of Mangalapuram.
The youths confessed to having indulged in racing. Their motorcycles were seized, the sources said.
