Udupi: A person suffered minor injuries when lightning struck him, and 22 houses and agricultural fields were damaged in heavy rains accompanied by strong winds on Monday. Sources in the Udupi taluk office said the house of Tanya Poojarti was completely damaged in Harady village and the loss was estimated at Rs. 2 lakh. The house of Girija Poojarti in Shirva village was damaged and the loss was estimated at Rs. 50,000. At Handady village, the house of Raviraj was damaged when a tree fell on it and the loss was estimated at Rs. 30,000. A house each belonging to Sundari and Manjula were damaged in Pernankila village and the loss of both houses taken together was estimated at Rs. 75,000. The house of Manju Naik in Heroor village was damaged and the loss was estimated at Rs. 20,000. The house of Gopi Poojarti was damaged at Heroor and the loss was estimated at Rs. 30,000. A tree fell on the house of Anant Naik in Balakudru village, damaging it. The loss was estimated at Rs. 22,000. Ash mixed with soil inundated about 25 acres of agricultural land at Santhur, damaging it. Sources in Kundapur taluk office said that a house each belonging to Girija Poojarti, Ganesh Prabhu, and Shankar Kargi were damaged when trees fell on them at Kumbashi. The loss to all three houses taken together was estimated at Rs. 1 lakh. As many as eight houses were damaged at Gopady. A house each belonging to Vanaja Nagaraj, Gulabi Narayana, Gulabi Markalti, Ananda Markala, Chennamma Mogerti, Rama Markala, Raga Suvarna, and Honamma Ganiga were damaged in the village. The loss to these eight houses taken together was estimated at Rs. 51,500. Sea erosion had been reported from Paduvari village. Rainwater inundated low-lying areas at Kalsanka, Gundibail, Mathura Chatra, Rajangana, Bailakere, and Malpe localities. CMC Commissioner Gokuldas Nayak told The Hindu that the CMC personnel had rushed to the areas to clear the storm-water drains which got blocked with plastic bottles and other plastic material. Sources in Karkala taluk office said that Ashok Poojary sustained burns when lightning struck him at Kakkuje village. The house of Kittanna Hegde was damaged at Mala village. The house of Beechu Handti was damaged at Kadsale village and a sericulture shed belonging to Srinath Seth was damaged in Bailoor. Forecast According to the control room at the Deputy Commissioner's office, the Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rains with winds blowing at the speed of 50 to 55 km per hour in the next 48 hours.
