Banks have undergone paradigm shift: Kamath

Staff Correspondent

Nitte: Chairman and Managing Director of Vijaya Bank H.S. Upendra Kamath on Monday said there had been a paradigm shift in banks.

Speaking at the Graduation Day ceremony of Justice K.S. Hegde Institute of Management (JKSHIM), here, Mr. Kamath said there had been a transformation in the sector from the pre-nationalisation days to the post-liberalisation era.Banking was an exciting career option for the MBA graduates as career progression had undergone a sea change in the field. A person need not wait for years to get a promotion, he said.

“A youth who joins the bank as a probationary officer can aspire to become a General Manager within 16 years. You will also have a sense of satisfaction for being a development banker,” he said.

“With banks embarking on financial inclusion in a big way, the banker will have the noble role of taking banking services to the underprivileged sections of society. So while you pursue your career as a banker and prosper, you will also contribute to the growth of the economy and the nation,” he said.

The purpose of education was pursuit of truth. There was no end to this pursuit, he said and added: “It is not proper on the part of a person to feel that he has mastered a particular art or science, trade or skill because there is always scope for improvement.”Education was never complete as the world had many lessons to teach. “Humility in approach is the hallmark of a highly learned man,” he said.

All these qualities could be achieved by anybody provided he or she had a burning desire inside. Students should have the desire to pursue, absorb, perfect and excel. It should be a continuous purpose, he said. “Never be complacent, try for perfection first in whatever you do and then for excellence,” Mr. Kamath said. Two students Varsha Bhandarkar and Sumalatha J. were awarded gold medals.
