New sanitary landfill site to be operational soon

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A newly-developed sanitary landfill site at Narela-Bawana Road with a 1,200 metric tonnes per day capacity would become operational within a week relieving other sanitary landfill sites of additional burden of solid waste.

The decision was taken at a meeting chaired by Delhi Mayor Rajni Abbi. Standing Committee chairman Yogendra Chandolia, Leader of the House Subhash Arya, Environment Management Services Committee chairman Rakesh Gulia, Municipal Commissioner K. S. Mehra, Additional Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners and chief engineers were also present.

The Mayor dubbed the move as a “milestone” in solid waste management in Delhi. “It was also decided to procure three new bulldozers on an immediate basis for levelling the solid waste at SLF sites. More bulldozers would also be purchased as per requirements by following tendering procedures. With a view to ensure proper performance of the private operators in six zones, it was decided to impose heavy fines and deduct tipping fees in case of default in removal and transportation of solid waste,” she added.

She said the MCD has made elaborate arrangements to meet the monsoon requirements. According to the civic body, one central and 12 fully-equipped zonal control rooms are working 24x7 to attend to complaints from citizens and RWAs. Pumping stations at 108 vulnerable points have been stationed. Nearly 525 portable pumps have been deployed zone-wise and 107 permanent pumping stations have been geared to meet the challenge. Fourteen high-discharge mobile diesel pump sets have also been pressed into service along with 12 mobile pumping units.
