AITC members observe fast

Tirupur: Members of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) observed fast here on Monday seeking government intervention to end the crisis experienced in the dyeing segment in Tirupur knitwear cluster and demanding withdrawal of mandatory excise duty imposed on readymade garments recently, among other issued.
S. Zakhir Hussain, AITC district president, said the State Government should help the dyers to implement a feasible technology to ensure proper effluent treatment and thereby, facilitate the reopening of the closed dyeing and bleaching units in the cluster.
Any further delay in the reopening of the dyeing units would affect the livelihood of the lakhs of workers employed in the textile industry here, Mr. Hussian added..
The agitators demanded withdrawal of 10.3 percent excise duty being levied on ready garments through a budgetary announcement. On Mullaperiyar issue, C. Nandakumar, AITC state youth wing secretary, opined that the Central Government should make sure that Kerala government follow the court verdict.
