Rs. 10 lakh reward for Mumbai police team

Mumbai: Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil on Monday announced a reward of Rs. 10 lakh for the Mumbai police who made a breakthrough in the MiD Day journalist Jyotirmoy Dey murder case, arresting seven accused persons.

“Many teams were working on this case. The reward will be given to the successful team. The strength of the force to crack this murder case was equal to that engaged in the investigation of the blast cases in Mumbai, because this was an attack on the fourth pillar of democracy,” Mr. Patil told journalists here.

“The government put faith in the Mumbai Crime Branch and it did not let us down. We congratulate the police and senior officers involved in the investigation.”

Mr. Patil said the seven accused had been arrested with “enough evidence.” “The Crime Branch worked day and night. The investigation officer kept the operations confidential. The media too cooperated.”

He promised that the murder mastermind and all others involved in the crime would be brought to book.

Mr. Patil said the motive behind the murder would be revealed “at the right time.”

Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan too lauded the police for cracking the case in 15 days.

“Questions remain”

Meanwhile, Jatin Desai, a representative of Mumbai journalists, said the demand for a CBI probe would be decided by court.

“The court will decide on our demand depending on whether it is satisfied or not. It is for the court to respond. We are not in a position to comment on the arrests, but certain questions remain. For instance, what is the motive? If [gangster] Chhota Rajan gave a supari [contract killing sum] to the killers, who gave a supari to Chhota Rajan? We will be raising our concerns before the court at the next hearing on July 6,” said the senior journalist.
