Srikakulam making it big in the education front

In the last one decade the district of Srikakulam has seen the growth of professional colleges at a rapid pace. Once known to be lagging behind its neighbouring district Visakhapatnam, the district is today on par as far as professional engineering colleges are concerned.

GMRIT

GMR Institute of Technology (GMRIT) was established by GMR Varalakshmi Foundation the corporate social responsibility arm of the GMR Group.

The GMR Group is an infrastructure major with business interests in airports, energy, highways, urban infrastructure and sports. GMRIT is governed by a governing council comprising very eminent individuals who include a former IIT Director, a former IIT Dean, a former CEC, a Professor of IIT, an industry leader, former DRDO Scientists, a DST Professional, a Vice Chancellor, and others. The Governing Council is chaired by a well-known former Professor of IIM, Ahmedabad. The institution is affiliated to Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada; approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE); accredited by NBA of AICTE, New Delhi; accredited by NAAC of UGC, New Delhi and is an ISO 9001:2008 certified.

GMRIT is a wireless campus spread over 155 acres, in Rajam, about 100 kms from Visakhapatanam. The institute offers an outstanding academic environment and campus facilities for its students with state of the art infrastructure and excellent amenities.

GMRIT was the first engineering college to go wireless four years ago, it is also the first college in AP to have put all its courses session-wise on local area network for easy revision by students. And now, GMRIT is working towards a campus that will be friendly to the physically challenged.

The UG programmes offered are: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Information Technology and Mechanical Engineering.

Courses offered under P G programmes are: M. Tech in Electrical and Electronics, Engineering-Power and Industrial Drives, Computer Science and Engineering-CSE, Masters in Computer Applications (MCA).

Collaborative programmes include: Diploma Programs such as Electronics and Communication Engineering - Digital Electronics and Communication Systems Mechanical Engineering – CAD/CAM, Engg in Aircraft Engineering from Perth College UK, a twinning program offered with a Tripartite MOU between GMR Group, Perth Universty – UK and Andhra University. Civil Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Electronics Engineering The placement cell conducts workshops, seminars and guest lectures to improve communication and presentation skill of the students.

Aditya Institue of Technology and Management (AITAM), Tekkali

The acronym AITAM stands tall as Aditya Institute of Technology And Management in the field of technical education. The sprawling campus is supported with technical ambience and experienced faculty. The college is a boon for the rural students who intend to become technocrats.

Founded in 2001 by a team of highly qualified, philanthropic and committed educationalists, the campus is spread on a vast expanse of 35 acres of land just on the NH5 and about 40 km from the district head quarters, Srikakulam. The college has earned a commendable position among the premier institutes of the state. It is crowned with the esteemed accreditations such as NBA of AICTE and NAAC of UGC. This incredible pace of progress and the enviable position which the college commands today have been possible due to relentless efforts of the management to provide the necessary infrastructure and acquire and retain the best talented faculty in all the departments.

Spacious class rooms, well equipped laboratories, workshops, vast built up area, play grounds, efficient transport system to all parts of the district, separate hostels for boys and girls, canteen, stores and gym make this college an ideal place for learning. The college has been successful in providing homely atmosphere to its students because of all the above mentioned amenities.

The college has a sophisticated air conditioned central library with 30,000 books, 180 journals, undisturbed reading space for over hundred people, a digital library, reference section, OPAC system, excellent reprographic section, DELNET provision and Wi-Fi campus.

The library has an extended branch at Srikakulam in which internet facility and reference section are available. Every department has its well furnished R&D labs to establish a constructive relation with industry which will help our student community long run. The College has also entered into MoUs with various foreign universities to attract research projects and to enhance the chances of placements. A separate wing of Entrepreneurship Development Cell has been set up in order to develop the spirit of entrepreneurship among the students. The Cell directs the students and creates awareness about further studies in both India and abroad and various job opportunities.

AITAM constituted a separate Training and Placement Cell with full fledged faculty members and necessary amenities to impart training to its students and to prepare them to face interviews with confidence.

AITAM has got an innovation centre run by Microsoft with in-house training team. Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) of Government of India has recently started an incubation centre to foster the zeal of entrepreneurship among students. IT giant, Wipro started its Mission 10X program with an assiduous team on campus.

SRI SIVANI GROUP OF COLLEGES

Introduction: Sri Sivani group of colleges were established in the year 2006 by Sri Sivani Educational society. The society offers various courses in B.Tech, M. Tech, B. Pharm, M. Pharm, MBA and MCA.

This institution is located at about 9 km from Srikakulam and spread over 43 acres of land. The campus is eco-friendly and is an ideal location for studies. Institution is affiliated to JNTU- Kakinada and is approved by AICTE, New Delhi.

The management of the society started this institution to promote quality professional education in the rural parts of the district and produce quality professionals for the country. The institution has well-equipped labs, well-stocked library, full-fledged training and placement section, internet connection, experienced faculty, located in a serene environment, accessible and well-furnished canteen. The institution also has facilities for in-house soft skills training and CRT programmes. It has also got a very active placement cell. The institution recorded over 200 placements in various core industries and software sector in 2011.

Shiva Rama Krishna College of Engineering and Technology

It is the only college in the district which is affiliated to Andhra University.

The Institution was set up as part of the CSR of Saraswatamma Educational Society. The vision of the institution is to produce engineers and technocrats to serve the research and development wing of the country.

As an initiative SRKT has started a dedicated research lab and those students and staff who are involved in these activates are encouraged with sponsorship and guidance.

Though it has been two years since the institute has taken shape it has already commenced research in three elite different areas of specialization. The college has spent more than Rs. 7,00,000 towards research till date. In association with K-Technologies- Berhampur, various workshops on artificial intelligence are conducted as a part of the R & D in the institution. In March 2011, a team of 10 dedicated students had participated in the prestigious ROBOCON – the robotics contest organised by Maharahstra Academy of Engineers & DD India at Pune. The team has created history as the only college from Andhra Pradesh to compete successfully with IITs, NITs and other elite institutions.

The faculty strength includes experienced men from the industry. Enough space and opportunity is given to the students to explore and exhibit their creative ideas at various forums within the campus. New and innovative ideas are supported with guidance and technical support. Scholarships are also provided to motivate the students.
