dated June 29, 1961: Vanamahotsava

Prime Minister Nehru says that while tree-planting should be a continued process throughout the year or at appropriate times in the year, the coming Vanamahotsava (to be celebrated from July 1 to 7), is a special occasion “of which we should take advantage by planting large number of trees.” He adds, “It is not enough to plant, we must take care of them, tend them and look after the young saplings with affection and tenderness.” In a message sent from Manali on June 18 in this connection, he said, “I have come to Manali after three years and spent ten days here in a little cottage on the edge of the Deodar forest. I am sure, it has done me much good to be near these magnificent trees. There are many reasons why we should plant trees. For economic reasons we want them, as well as to protect the soil, but I like them for almost humane reasons for I look upon them as friends and they soothe me. It is easy to cut down a tree but it takes a long time for it to grow.”
