‘Apprise farmers of methods to deal with global warming'

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: Rajasthan Agriculture Minister Harjiram Burdak has asked agricultural scientists to include the impacts of climate change in their research work and apprise the farmers of the methods to deal with global warming while selecting new seed varieties and augmenting their crop yield.

Inaugurating a horticulture training programme at Swami Keshavanand Agricultural University in Bikaner, Mr. Burdak said optimum utilisation of water sources for irrigation was “the need of the hour” in view of increasing temperature and erratic rainfall.

“Seventy per cent of the agricultural land in Rajasthan depends on rainwater. Water level in bore-wells is [constantly] declining. We need to understand all aspects of climate change to cope with its consequences,” said Mr. Burdak.

The Minister said the State Government was promoting horticulture as an avocation supplementing the income of farmers. According to an official release here, Mr. Burdak flagged off a mobile exhibition on modern agricultural practices on the occasion.

The technical staff accompanying the exhibition would conduct free-of-cost tests on soil, plants, water and cattle at Krishi Vigyan Kendras in the rural areas.
