More power plants to be set up

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Wartsila India, part of a global leader in complete lifecycle power solutions for the marine and energy markets is of the view that there is great potential in India for decentralised power plants fired by diesel or liquefied natural gas, rather than the conventional thermal plants.

At a press conference here on Tuesday, Wartsila India's managing director Rakesh Sarin said, “After supplying about 3,500 mega watt through such plants in India so far, we are now working on seizing the emerging opportunity during the 12th Five Year Plan.” He added that their USP was the smart power generation concept. This new approach, he said, looked at minimising start and shut-down time and tweaking the performance of the plants in tune with the demand.

Reliable and economical power availability was a key enabler to meet a country's growth aspirations, he said, adding that Wartsila had experience of 24/7 power markets and brought world-class energy efficiency, fuel and operational flexibility. He said no single technology was a solution in isolation and hence an integrated approach for the power sector was vital. Wartsila India is the Indian arm of the Helsinki-based Euro 4.6 billion Wartsila group that is a leading supplier of flexible power plants for the power generation markets. Globally, the group offers competitive and reliable solutions for base load power generation, grid stability and peaking, industrial self-generation and for the oil and gas industry.
