Thanjavur medical college is one of the oldest institutions among the Government Medical Colleges in Tamilnadu. In 1961, the college was opened, and is now on its way to celebrate its golden jubilee year.
The college was the collective effort of Shri. K. Kamaraj, then the chief minister of Tamilnadu & Shri. AYS Parisutha Nadar, the then Congress MLA of Thanjavur. Shri. AYS Parisutha Nadar donated about 300 acres of land for the building of the college.
The college has shown significant advancement in all spheres starting from the number of undergraduate seats, commencement of postgraduate courses, and super specialty blocks to the use of latest diagnostic equipments in the teaching process.
The initial intake for the undergraduate courses was a mere 75 boys and 25 girls which has today risen to 200, with the number of girls outnumbering the boys. All the departments have postgraduate degrees and diploma courses in their respective disciplines.
The golden jubilee celebrations are to be held at the college auditorium on the 6th and 7th of August and is being organised by the 1961 batch of the college.
