Jury hears testimonials of 32 women Drishti holds two-day hearing Bangalore: The government should undertake a survey in all districts to get primary data on the number of destitute, separated, widowed and deserted women in the State, so that welfare schemes can reach them, according to a jury at a public hearing on single women here. The eight-member jury, which heard testimonials of 32 women from the districts over two days at a hearing organised by Drishti, a Bidar-based non-governmental organisation, underlined the need to integrate all schemes meant for women in distress in a single window scheme, and make them accessible at taluk levels. The jury took note of the obstacles women face when they try to access formal justice system, and recommended speedy and gender sensitive trials and free legal counselling. It voiced concern about child marriages that continue to be rampant in the villages to this day. Most of the testimonies spoke about bigamy, various forms of domestic violence and lack of community support during times of crisis. Most of the women have found often the formal legal trials expensive. The jury members included Anayasuya of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, Madhu Bhushan of Vimochana, Sharada B.N. of Parivarthan, Aarthi Mundkur of Alternative Law Forum, Sushma Varma of Samanatha Mahila Vedike and Usha B.N. of Hengasara Hakkina Sangha.
