Letters to the Editor
That seven persons have been nabbed in connection with the murder of senior crime journalist Jyotirmoy Dey is heartening, even though the motive behind the killing remains unknown. The Mumbai police have salvaged their image. However, as pointed out in the editorial “Finally, a breakthrough” (June 28), it is equally important to find out the reasons for the crime. The campaign by journalists and people's spontaneous outcry against Dey's killing contributed to the breakthrough. S.V. Venugopalan, Chennai The intense pressure exerted by the media on the Maharashtra government forced the Mumbai police to act in right earnest. But what is disheartening is the fact that the main killers may never be apprehended. When all is said and done, journalists and whistle-blowers need to exercise utmost vigil, especially when they are dealing with the underworld and political corruption. Harischandra Parshuram, Mumbai
