Seeking action:Protesters blocking traffic on the Belur-Chikmagalur road on Wednesday. Hassan: Belur town observed a bandh on Wednesday in protest against the alleged neglect of the taluk by the BJP Government. The Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Dalit Sangharsh Samiti and the taluk unit of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha had given the bandh call. The Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) extended support to it. March Members of the organisations took out a march through the main streets raising slogans against the Government. Y.N. Rudresh Gowda, Belur MLA, and H.K. Javare Gowda, district unit president of JD(S), took part in the protest. The protesters alleged that the public had been demanding extension of the KSRTC bus-stand area, basic amenities, improvement of roads and quality power supply to rural areas, and the Government had failed to fulfil them. Mr. Gowda said that the bandh call was given by “pro-people” organisations, which were angry with the Government's lackadaisical attitude towards the development of the town. There was a good response from the public to the bandh call. Shops on the main streets remained closed till evening. Schools and colleges were closed for the day. The protesters blocked traffic on Belur-Chikmagalur Road for half an hour. The police took 30 people into preventive custody.
