VISAKHAPATNAM: P. Mohana Rao, Special Judge for CBI Cases, Visakhapatnam, on Wednesday sentenced a telephone mechanic (lineman) of BNSL Ungunturu Telephone Exchange in Krishna district to undergo simple imprisonment for two years and to pay a fine of Rs.5,000 for demanding and accepting bribe. The CBI filed a chargesheet against O. Kanaka Rao, the then Regular Mazdoor of BSNL and Gadala Purnachandra Rao, the then telephone mechanic before the Special Judge for CBI cases, Visakhapatnam, for the offences under the Section 120-B IPC and Section 7 and 13(1) (d) read with 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. The allegation was that Purnachadra Rao in connivance with Kanaka Rao demanded a bribe of Rs.1,200 for giving a telephone connection for a coin collection box. They later reduced the bribe amount to Rs.700. Purnachandra Rao was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe amount for himself and for Kanaka Rao from the complainant. The charges under the relevant Sections were framed against the accused on January 1, 2007.
