Staff Reporter
Stern action:Sanitary workers of Namakkal Municipality pouring adulterated and spoilt fruit juice into the drainage at the Namakkal bus stand on Wednesday.
Namakkal: Namakkal Municipal officials and sanitary workers on Wednesday seized seven tonnes of fruits – four tonnes of artificially ripened mangoes using carbide stones and three tonnes of rotten jack fruit – from shops near the Namakkal town bus stand.
Municipal Commissioner (In-Charge) G. Balachandaran who headed the raid said that the team raided nearly 115 shops, near the bus stand, on Wednesday.
The fruits valued at nearly Rs. 2.5 lakh was seized from four shops and were fined Rs. 2,000. Roadside mango sellers packed their baskets and cleared the bus stand area to save their mangoes from getting destroyed by the municipal workers. “Till date we have seized close to 16 tonnes of mangoes,” the Commissioner said.
Close to 500 litres of fruit juice that was not in edible condition but were kept for sale in three shops were poured into the drains, while water packets and bottles that did not have date of packing, batch numbers and other basic details were also destroyed. Steps would be taken to take action on a Namakkal-based drinking water packaging company that supplied the packeged waters, Mr. Balachandran added.
