Demand for burial ground
Staff Reporter
Tirupur: Members of All India Agricultural Workers Union, affiliated to CPI(M), and Untouchablity Eradication Front laid siege to Nadupatti panchayat office on Wednesday demanding an exclusive burial ground for Adi Dravidar community in the area.
They resorted to the agitation as their representations highlighting the demand were been cold shouldered by the authorities concerned in the last many months.
According to the Adi Dravidar community, they are being denied access to the common burial grounds set up in the panchayat by upper caste people and also getting prevented from using private land to cremate their dear ones.
The crowd moved away only after they got an assurance from the revenue officials and civic body representatives that an alternative would be worked out immediately to ensure cremations with highest order of dignity.
