Kozhikode: The Farmers Association of India has said that the service of scientists from universities in Kerala does not reach Krishi Bhavans or rural farmers. A meeting of the Central Committee of the association, held here recently, said that these scientists did not adhere to rules and most of them, including Junior Assistants, Professors and Associate Deans, did not do any research. There are 10 research centres, six regional research centres, 20 agriculture-related development agencies and 20 agriculture research centres in the State. “As per rules, scientists appointed at these centres must work there for at least five years. However, most of them influence higher authorities to get a transfer to their desired location. Most agricultural scientists in the State are based at Vellayani in Thiruvananthapuram and Vellanikkara in Thrissur where there are better facilities for their families,” according to a press release issued here. The release added that the scientists were supposed to conduct research on the soil structure of their regions, farming methods suitable to the weather conditions and insect infection. However, most of them went on field visits only when they get some information from media, the association said. It demanded that the results of research in other States be made available in Kerala.
