Steep wage hike for beedi workers

HYDERABAD: Conceding a long-pending demand, the government has steeply hiked the daily wages of beedi workers and other categories of employees in the beedi-making industry. Beedi-making is undertaken mainly in Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Warangal, Khammam, Nalgonda, Mahabubnagar, East Godavari, Visakhapatnam and Chittoor districts.
The increase, which will benefit over 10 lakh people will work out to a massive 61 per cent for beedi-workers . They will get a minimum of Rs.137.35 for 1,000 beedis. With the inclusion of other benefits this will go up to Rs.178- Rs.180 per 1,000 beedis rolled. At a media conference here on Wednesday, Labour & Employment Minister D. Nagender said the monthly payment to tobacco distributor and beedi sorter had been increased to from Rs 2,715.40 to Rs 4,696 (58 per cent hike); for battiwala and packer Rs 2,824.40 to Rs 5,696 (50 per cent); for watchman, tray filler, gampawala Rs 2,606.40 to 4,696 (56 per cent); for gumastha Rs 3,054.40 to Rs 5,196 (59 per cent); for accountant Rs 3,523.40 to Rs 6,196 (57 per cent), typist-cum-cashier Rs 3,553.40 to Rs 5,196 (68 per cent) and; manager Rs 5,100.40 to Rs. 8,196 (62 per cent).
