Make Kurnool capital of Rayalaseema: Minister

Staff Reporter

GUNTUR: While asserting the need to keep Andhra Pradesh united, Minor Irrigation Minister T.G. Venkatesh has reiterated his demand that Kurnool be recognised as the capital of Rayalaseema if Telangana is formed.

Kurnool would have witnessed tremendous development had it been retained as the State capital after the formation of Andhra Pradesh, he said and sought clarity from the Central government on the issue of statehood to Telangana.

Speaking to media persons here on Wednesday, Mr. Venkatesh said Telangana would face serious problems if the State was bifurcated and it would spark similar demands for separate States across the country. He was in favour of development councils which were mooted by the Srikrishna Committee or financial packages. On minor irrigation projects, Mr. Venkatesh said a sum of Rs. 3,000 crore is to be spent in the current financial year. Lift irrigation schemes were serving the needs of 1,18,000 acres in Guntur district.
