6,000 stray dogs roam the streets of Sangli

Kolhapur: There are nearly six thousands stray dogs in Sangli, it has emerged on Wednesday.
The rising number of dogs was an issue that was hotly debated at the Standing Committee meeting of the Sangli-Miraj Municipal Corporation on Tuesday.
Concerns were expressed over the incidents of dog bites. The committee members pointed out to the authorities concerned in the Health Department that a rabid dog had bitten 12 persons on a single day while a group of dogs in various lanes in the town sparking fears among the people. Health authorities said it was difficult to put an end to the menace as they would be at the wrong end of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. About Rs.35 lakh was needed for the birth control operations, the authorities said.
