Kerala government urged to release water in Neyyar left channel

Staff reporter

Nagercoil: The district unit of the Congress party has urged the Kerala government to release water in Neyyar left channel for the benefit of farmers in Vilavancode taluk to undertake agriculture operations.

The Neyyar dam was the source of supply for the Kanyakumari branch channel and situated in Neyyattinkarai taluk in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. The right side channel with a capacity of 300 c/s taking off from this dam irrigates the ayacuts in Kerala. The left side channel irrigates ayacuts both in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The designated capacity of this channelis 300 c/s. The Kanyakumari branch channel takes off from the left side channel, at 24/1400 mile (Kollencode Head work).

The ayacut originally proposed under this Kanyakumari branch channel was 9,200 acres, of which the extent so far developed was only 3,370 acres.

Rules of Regulation for Neyyar Irrigation System have been sent. The Government considered entering into an agreement on this with the Kerala Government and accordingly sent a draft agreement for which Kerala Government's reply is awaited.

According to the proposed agreement and also as per the rules of regulation of Neyyar Irrigation System sent by Kerala Government, a normal supply of 152 c/s was to be made available at Kollencode Head works.

This quantity includes 2 c/s for the ayacut in Kerala lying under the Kanyakumari branch. In years of less water, supply should be effected between the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the ratio of 1:3.

However in practice, even 107 c/s is not received in Kanyakumari Branch. Only an average of 32 to 75 c/s. is being received inspite of requests having been made for increasing the supply.

In the meantime the Vilavancode MLA, S. Vijayadharani of the Congress party met the Kerala Chief Minister, Oomen Chandy, and urged him to ensure the release of water in Neyyar left channel for the benefit of farmers in Vilavancode taluk. She also appealed him to operate Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses via Vilavancode.
