Shillong: Several families were affected and some two dozen dwellings badly damaged in inundation caused by heavy rain here since Tuesday night.
East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Jopthiaw Lyngdoh said 30 families were affected and over 20 dwellings damaged at the worst-affected Polo area.
The rain also forced over half a dozen families in the Mawlai Nongpdeng area to vacate their homes temporarily, while in the Madanryting area two houses were damaged by a mudslide.
Mr. Lyngdoh said the district administration has provided relief in the form of ration to the affected families.
Places like Polo, Nongmynsong, Forest Colony, Madanriting and Cleave Colony were inundated by the rain waters.
The overflowing Umkhrah river blocked several arterial roads here resulting in traffic jams.
Search, rescue, medical and relief team have fanned out in the affected areas.
Water Resource Minister A. L. Hek, who is in Kolkata, said hundreds of families were affected by the inundation. The rain waters also entered his residence.
He said he had asked his volunteers to assist the people.
Ministers B. M. Lanong and Ampareen Lyngdoh visited the affected areas in their constituencies.
Heavy continuous rain has lashed the city since Tuesday night. On Wednesday evening, the Deputy Commissioner held a meeting with officials of the disaster management cell and reviewed the situation. - PTI
