KATTAPPANA: The 50 lorry loads of sand seized in a raid at Anakkara, Chettukuzhy and Chakkupallam areas was auctioned on the spot on Wednesday. In the raid conducted by a team of revenue officials led by Sub-Collector R. Rajamanikyam and Udumbanchola tasildar V.R. Mohanan Pillai on Tuesday, 40 motors, three tractors and other equipment used for illegally mining sand from paddy fields were seized. The area is known for illegal mining and this is the third such raid conducted by officials. Mr. Rajamanikyam said raids would continue and cases would be registered against those who mine sand from paddy fields. The raid on Tuesday, which started in the morning, continued till the evening. The team also seized equipment used in a crusher unit which was functioning illegally in the area. The seized motors and tractors were moved to the police station at Vandanmedu. The raid was conducted with the help of a police team. District Superintendent of Police George Varghese said that more police personnel would be provided for helping the revenue officials in conducting such raids.
