Tuticorin-Coimbatore Express service from July 2

Staff Reporter

Tuticorin: People of Tuticorin will certainly be a happy lot following the resumption of rail services from Tuticorin to Coimbatore. Thanks to the Ministry of Railways for their efforts to operate rail services between these two cities. The Link Express Train (16611) service was announced by the Union Railway Minister, Mamata Banerjee, in the current railway budget session during February 2011. The much awaited journey to Coimbatore will commence from Tuticorin from July 2 (Saturday). Reservation for travellers of the daily Tuticorin – Coimbatore Link Express Train would be open from Thursday (June 30). The six bogie link express train will depart from Tuticorin railway station at 9.30 p.m. and arrive at Coimbatore at 7.30 a.m. on the next day. The Tuticorin bound train (16612) on return will depart from Coimbatore at 8.30 p.m. on July 1 and reach Tuticorin at 6.10 a.m. on the next day. The train will have a three – tier air-conditioned bogie, two sleeper class bogies, one general second class bogie and two luggage-cum-brake van coaches, according to M. Piramanayagam, Secretary, Tuticorin District Passengers Welfare Association.

The passengers need not alight at Vanchi Maniyachi railway station. The six-bogie link express train from Tuticorin will get attached to the Nagercoil – Coimbatore express train at Vanchi Maniyachi station. It will stop at stations including Tuticorin Melur, Milavittan, Vanchi Maniyachi, Kovilpatti, Sattur, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Dindigul, Karur, Pugalur, Erode and Tiruppur.

The travel fare to reach Coimbatore is Rs. 103 for general second class category. For passengers, who wish to board sleeper class, it is Rs. 203. As for boarding the three-tier air-conditioned coach, the fare is fixed to be Rs. 539.

Since trade operations are hectic in Tiruppur, the traders will also be delighted to board this link express train, which halts at Tiruppur. Passenger fare for boarding the air-conditioned coach to reach Tiruppur is Rs. 496 and for the sleeper class coach is Rs. 187. As far as the general second class coach is concerned, passengers could board at a fare of Rs. 94 per head. Over a long time back, the Tuticorin – Coimbatore rail service was made operational but due to broad gauge conversion works, the rail service had been cancelled in 1987, Mr. Piramanayagam said. After a gap of more than twenty four years, the rail services have been scheduled to resume.
