KADAPA: Rajiv Vidya Mission Project Officer K. Suryanarayana Reddy and staff detected child labourers working in hotels and other establishments near Kadapa market yard, Machupalle bus stand, Ghousenagar and Chinna Chowk on Wednesday and picked up 40 children under the age of 14. RVM officials conducted the raids as part of the Education Fortnight. Those who employed the children would be brought to book, as engaging child labour was a crime, Mr. Suryanarayana Reddy said. The child labourers who were picked up would be admitted to school-cum-hostels and residential bridge centres and given education. He urged the child labourers to join schools and study. The district has about 5,422 child labourers and of them, 1,820 were admitted to schools, he said. He advised hoteliers, traders and owners of other establishments not to employ children below 14 years, as they would be liable for penal action, including imprisonment up to six months, and fine.
