Chief Minister opens ‘Kuvempu Nirantara'

Shimoga: “Kuvempu Nirantara”, a campaign launched by Kuvempu Pratishthana to popularise the writings of poet laureate Kuvempu, was inaugurated by Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa in the city on Wednesday.

Mr. Yeddyurappa said the State Government had sanctioned Rs. 1 crore for the campaign of which Rs. 50 lakh had been released. The remaining amount would be released at the earliest, he said.

Mr. Yeddyurappa suggested that the Kannadigas develop the practice of purchasing the books and reading them. It is necessary to imbibe the values enshrined in the literary works of Kuvempu to lead a meaningful life, he said.

About Rs. 200 crore had been earmarked for the Department of Kannada and Culture in the current annual budget. In the wake of classical language status being awarded to Kannada, another Rs. 5 crore was provided for study and research activities. In addition to this, funds were given to re-printing the Kannada encyclopaedia, he said. Elaborating on the “Kuvempu Niranthara” campaign, Chairperson of Kuvempu Pratishthana Dr. Hampa Nagarajaiah said a specially decorated vehicle would be visiting the taluk centres and screen a documentary film on the life and achievements of Kuvempu. In addition to this, books authored by Kuvempu would be sold at a discount too.

Chairperson of Legislative Council D.H. Shankaramurthy, Members of Parliament B.Y. Raghavendra and Ayanur Manjunath were present at the function.
