HYDERABAD: A teenager from the city has won this year's prestigious Bal Shree Award, conferred by National Bal Bhavan. The only Bal Shree awardee for this year from the State, R. Nikhil Siddharth, an Inter Second year student, won this award under the category of ‘Creative Scientific Innovations'.
A regular participant in science fairs and other extra curricular activities, Mr. Siddharth attended National Science Congress in 2008 and found that obesity in his schoolmates was a result of their habit of consuming junk food. He, along with his team mates, conducted a seminar in his school and helped impose a ban on the sale of junk food in his school. He also attended National Science Seminars in 2009 and 2010.
Started in 1995, Bal Shree awards are conferred to encourage creativity and innovation in the children.
The awards are conferred in four categories, creative performance, creative arts, creative scientific innovations and creative writing. The award consists of a plaque and certificate presented by the President of India along with a cash award and literature set. The Bal Shree award will be presented to him by the President of India next month.
