Gala events mark SOS day celebration

Staff Reporter

NAGAPATTINAM: The SOS Children's Village celebrated its third SOS day here recently. The non-profit organisation, functioning under the chain of SOS Children's Villages worldwide was started here in August 2008, with the objective of sheltering children orphaned by the tsunami.

The celebrations were marked by various cultural programmes performed by the village children.

The gaiety of the occasion was interspersed with performances of bharatanatyam, villupattu, bhangra, peacock dance, and music including miruthangam and keyboard.

The village consists of close-knit cottages run under the care of ‘house-mothers', providing an enabling environment of a middle-class household for about 10 children in each cottage.

The SOS village in Nagapattinam is the second SOS village in Tamil Nadu, with the first one started in 1979 in Tambaram in Chennai.

Collector T.Munusamy presided over as the chief guest.

VijayKumar, Assistant Superintendent of Police was also present on the occasion.
