Watch the bite:Chief Medical Director, Southern Railway, Chennai, S.Vijayakumar, distributing pamphlet to a traveller at the Tiruchi railway junction on Wednesday. TIRUCHI: A cleanliness–cum–anti-malaria campaign was organised by the medical branch of the Tiruchi Railway Division at Tiruchi Junction on Wednesday. The Chief Medical Director, Southern Railway, Chennai, S.Vijayakumar inaugurated the campaign and distributed pamphlets to passengers on board the Chennai–Madurai Vaigai Express upon its arrival in Tiruchi and also those waiting at the station. The Chief Medical Superintendent, Railway Hospital, Ponmalai, Dr.Velusamy, doctors of Railway Hospital, Ponmalai, officials attached to the Medical branch of Tiruchi Division and members of the St. John's Ambulance Brigade also distributed cleanliness, malaria-related pamphlets to the travellers. The campaign was organised with the aim of seeking the cooperation of passengers to help railways in keeping the stations clean besides creating awareness of malaria, mode of transmission of the disease, and precautionary steps to be taken to check the infection. Since June is observed as Anti Malaria month, it was decided to organise cleanliness-cum-anti malaria campaign around this time of the year, said railway officials. Dr.Vijayakumar said that similar campaigns were being organised at all railway divisions across the Southern Railway Zone to create awareness among people as well as to seek their cooperation in keeping the railway stations clean. A total number of 12 cleanliness campaigns were conducted in Tiruchi Railway Division in the 2010-11 financial year.
