VIJAYAWADA: Nation Sample Survey Organisation observed Statistical Day on Wednesday. The day is observed in the country to remember eminent economist and founder of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkota, P. C. Mahalanobis on the day of his birth anniversary. Deputy Director General, NSSO, Vijayawada PSR Prasad lit the lamp at a function held on its office premises and garlanded the portrait of P. C. Mahalanobis . He said observation of Statistical Day was to create awareness among young generation on importance of statistics in day-to-day life. Students from various colleges participated in elocution, and essay writing competition held at the NSSO office. Later prizes were distributed. Winners were: Elocution top three: V.S. Bhavya, St. Theresa College, Eluru, P. Sushmitha Maris Stella College, Vijayawada and V. Radhika Sithartha Mahila Kalasala, Vijayawada; Essay writing top three: M. Geetha, Maris Stella College, B. Sujitha St. Theresa, Eluru and S. sujani Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada. Students and faculty from Krishna, West and East Godavari, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts attended the celebrations. Professor Nagarjuna, from Maharaja College, Vizianagaram, S Yesobu, lecturer from Andhra Layola College, Vijayawada, and D. Madhumalati, lecturer from St. Theresa's College, Eluru, attended the function.
