KOCHI: District panchayat president Eldhose Kunnappally has said that the issue of garbage management would be handled with people's participation. Mr. Kunnappally was inaugurating a workshop for district panchayat members on decentralised waste management at Cherai on Wednesday. District panchayat will take a lead role in instilling among the people a culture of treating waste at the origin of generation. An action plan will be formed by convening a meeting of three-tier panchayat attended by division members next month. Separate committees with representatives of voluntary organisations, trade and commerce, residents' associations, Kudumbasree, and social and political workers will be formed at panchayat levels. Mr. Kunnappally said that general awareness campaigns and review meetings will be conducted by organising neighbourhood groups comprising 20-25 families in a panchayat. He said that funds through the Sanitation Mission will be made available to all grama panchayats taking initiative in setting up small-scale vermin-composting system or biogas units for treating household garbage. An intensive sanitation drive will be launched in schools, anganawadis, and other public institutions. District panchayat vice-president Bindu George presided. District Sanitation Coordinator P. K. Alexander and district panchayat secretary Abdul Kalam Azad led classes.
