Boppudi scheme will bring under cultivation nearly 3,000 acres of land Officials asked to explore revival of non-functional projects VIJAYAWADA: Minister for Minor Irrigation T.G. Venkatesh on Wednesday said plans were afoot to bring into play satellite remote sensing to identify and assess the 65,000 irrigation tanks across the State. The Minister laid foundation stone for Boppudi scheme in Chilakaluripet constituency. The new project is estimated to cost Rs. 15.7 crore and it will bring under cultivation nearly 3,000 acres of land. Addressing a press conference on the sidelines of a review meeting with officials of the minor irrigation department, Mr. Venkatesh said there were 1740 lift irrigation schemes in the State with 9.40 lakh acres of ayacut land. He said steps would be taken to double this area in the next three years. Lift irrigation Explaining about the irrigation scenario in Krishna district, he said of the total of 112 lift irrigation schemes here, only 86 were working. “Ten of them are partially working, 11 of them are non-functional while five have been abandoned.” The Minister said the officials concerned were asked to explore the revival of the non-functional projects. MLAs Tangirala Prabhakar Rao, Velampalli Srinivasa Rao, Malladi Vishnu, Jogi Ramesh and Sriram Tataiah were present. Irrigation EE Subbarao and AP State Irrigation Development Corporation MD G. Ratna Kumar were also present.
