Pest menace affects classes

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Teachers and staff of the Christu Jayanthi Public School, Kakkanad, complained that flies from the Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant of the corporation have made the functioning of the school difficult.

Students of the school were not unable to have their lunch due to the swarming flies and stench emanating from the rotting garbage heaps. Though the Chief Minister had directed the Kochi Mayor to cover the waste with soil, lime, and chemicals to keep away the flies, the corporation did not act, said Saji Varghese, principal of the school. Visitors to the plant site found it difficult to get out of the vehicles due to the all pervading stench of the decaying garbage, said Fr. Augustine Mampilly, director of the school.

However, T. K. Ashraf, chairman of the Health Standing Committee of the Kochi Corporation, said that the corporation had taken efforts for preventing the spreading of flies. There was no serious issue as alleged by the school authorities. The corporation had deployed some of its health staff to the plant site to handle the situation, he said.
