Plea to withdraw DMDK registration dismissed
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has dismissed a writ petition seeking to direct the Election Commission to withdraw the status of registration of political party given to the DMDK, in view of its leader Vijayakant's alleged remarks relating to the Kargil war, at Villupuram on March 24 this year. The petitioner sought a direction to the Commission to give him an opportunity of hearing and conduct a proper enquiry into the remarks.
In his petition, T.S. Rajan alleged that a Tamil daily had reported that Mr. Vijayakant, (at present the Leader of the Opposition), in response to a media question as to what his strategy in the election was, had replied implying that even the Indian Army did not have any strategy when it fought the Kargil war and other wars with Pakistan.
The Bench said that after giving its anxious consideration to the matter and considering a ratio laid down by the Supreme Court, it did not find any merit in the petition.
