MADURAI: For those looking to combine the awful temptation of shopping with good deeds like helping deserving people, here comes the perfect opportunity. Around 100 artisans from eight States in the North East have put on display some magnificently carved products that reflect their rich culture and heritage. Some exquisite sofas, chairs and stools created from bamboos, beautiful wood vases, traditional attires, handbags, lamps, are among the attractive items up for grabs. For those wondering how these intricate products are so exquisitely made, the artisans are giving live demonstrations at the venue on weaving. Visitors can interact with the artisans and get to know of the products. A total of 143 stalls have been put up at the ground floor and first floor of the MADITSSIA Auditorium. The expo is being organised by North Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation (NEHHDC). Coming under the Union Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, the Corporation works towards developing and promoting indigenous crafts of the region by connecting craftsmen to prospective markets. Apart from the “seven sisters” States of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, the Corporation also covers their neighbouring State of Sikkim. Says D.C. Borkotoky, General Manager, NEHHDC, “This is the fifth year we are holding the expo at Madurai. This is due to the good response from the people of Madurai. Every year, our Corporation helps organise the expo at 10 to 12 cities across the country.” The expo was inaugurated by Corporation Commissioner S. Sebastine in the presence of Corporation Chief Engineer K. Saktihvel. The expo, which began on Wednesday, will conclude on July 13. It would be open between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. The venue of the expo is MADITSSIA Auditorium on Dr. Ambedkar Road.
