Acquittal of six students in rape case upheld

Staff Reporter

Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Wednesday upheld the acquittal by a local court of six students charged with raping an American citizen who had come to study at the prestigious Tata Institute of Social Sciences here. The court observed that there was no direct evidence to prove forced sexual intercourse.

The Maharashtra government had challenged their acquittal. The High Court dismissed the State government's appeal.

A case was registered against Vinamra Soni, Harshvardharn Yadav, Jaskaran Singh Bhullar, Anish Borkataki, Dev Colabawala and Kundanraj Borgohain on April 12, 2009, alleging that they took the victim to one of the accused student's house and raped her.
