“There are mechanisms to correct irregularities”

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday said there were mechanisms within the system to correct irregularities. He told this to a group of editors here when asked about the findings of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India's draft report that has reportedly found major lapses in allocation of gas blocks to Reliance Industries Ltd.

Stating that it was “too premature” to say anything on the issue as the CAG report was only a draft, he said: “I have not read the full report. This is a special report which the [Petroleum and Natural Gas] ministry themselves had asked for...If there is any irregularity, there are mechanisms to correct it,” he said.

Criticises CAG

Dr. Singh was critical of the CAG for going beyond the mandate and for going public with his views.

“It has never been in the past that the CAG has held a press conference as the present CAG has done.

“Never in the past has the CAG decided to comment on a policy issue. It should limit the office to the role defined in the Constitution,” he said.
