A glimpse of the activities lined up for this very special year...
The famous Gajendra Circle
Fifty years, a major milestone in the history of an Institution, is an opportunity to introspect and review its performance keeping in mind the dreams of its founding fathers, and to plan meticulously for the years ahead.
The year long Golden Jubilee celebrations programmes have been integrated well with the academic environment of the Institute. The celebrations will be in consonance with the ideals of the Institute and will avoid pomp and splendour. The Golden Jubilee will see the launch of fresh academic and research initiatives at the Institute and showcase its contributions to society, through the involvement of faculty, students, staff, alumni, campus community, industry and other stakeholders.
A number of International Conferences are scheduled. New postgraduate programmes in Clinical Engineering, Medical Instrumentation, Catalysis, Nuclear Technology, and Petroleum Engineering will be offered. Our Science Departments will introduce integrated courses to meet the changing aspirations of students. Over 35 books in Science, Technology, Humanities and Management will be published by our faculty members. An International Journal, “Advances in Engineering Sciences and Applied Mathematics”, published by Springer Verlag will be launched. New Centres of Excellence in Telecommunications, Nano Technology, Bioprocess Technology and Sustainable Development are being established.
IIT Madras is proud of its strong association with Germany that began in its formative years. We commemorate this association of five decades during this year’s Golden Jubilee. The German Federal Minister for Education and Research along with our Union Minister for Science and Technology, and Earth Sciences will inaugurate a Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Development, an area critical to the future of humanity and of tremendous interest to both nations.
The well organised and popular students’ academic and cultural festivals, ‘Shaastra’ and ‘Saarang’, will showcase the finest talents from all over the country. Through the year, ‘Golden Jubilee Lectures’ will be delivered by eminent persons from all walks of life. A new Centre for Innovation, donated by alumni of the Class of 1981, dedicated to the student community, and planned by students, is ready with all facilities to enable the transformation of “ideas into products”.
Our Alumni of nearly 32,000, spread all over the globe and occupying top positions in industry and academia, are our pride. The Pan-IIT meet of the alumni of all IITs, will be held in the campus in December.
The campus community, through a variety of services including waste management, childcare and social upliftment programmes, has rendered yeoman service towards fulfilling the needs of its members. During this year, it will organise a series of socio-cultural events to present the colourful human dimensions of the campus. 50 years of IITM, Plants in the Campus and Animals of the Campus are some of the several general publications planned for the Golden Jubilee year.
The inauguration of the Golden Jubilee today by the Hon’ble Union Minister of HRD, Sri Arjun Singh, in the presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamilnadu, Dr Kalaignar M Karunanidhi, will mark the beginning of an exciting year ahead.
