Glimpses of history from the archives of The Hindu - I



MIDNIGHT, AUGUST 14-15, 1947: Jawaharlal Nehru is sworn in by Lord Mountbatten as independent India's first Prime Minister. The nation's leaders look on, but a notable absentee was Mahatma Gandhi who was in Calcutta and slept through the event.



June 7, 1947: Viceroy Lord Louis Mountbatten and his Adviser Lord Ismay, at a New Delhi conference where the Partition plan was disclosed. Jawaharlal Nehru is at left and M.A. Jinnah at right.



January 1942: The principal disciple seeks counsel from the Master at the AICC session in Wardha.



1948: Mahatma Gandhi's body lies in state in Birla House, New Delhi. He was assassinated by a Hindu fanatic, Nathuram Godse.
