PAN: whether it can be substituted?

My Permanent Account Number (PAN) is not a number which is considered lucky for me. For sentimental reasons I want to surrender the present one and apply for a fresh one. Could you tell me the procedure for the same?<

The number is at present not a matter of choice. Whether a new number could be given in such cases on numerological considerations is best answered by the Income-tax Depart- ment!
