The Hindu Speaks on Libraries

This selection of news, views, editorials etc. on libraries covering the preiod 1918 to 1992 has been compiled for the benefit of our readers, especially librarians and information scientists. This gives a general view of the developments in this field over the past seven decades a half. It is being presented chronologically for this purpose with an index. The selection has not been easy as the collection has been prolific, both quantitatively and qualitatively. Being confronted with a surfeit of excellent material, the problem was what to exclude. In making the choice the effort has been to cast the net wide to bring in as much variety as posible in the subject including a couple of light articles of humour. It is inevitable that a major chunk relates to the Public Library Movement. We are indeed sorry to have excluded the item `Outlook' on `The Role of Libraries in National Development' published on 27th Nov. 1978, as it would take up a sizeable number of pages and in the process eliminate many other items.

THE HINDU has been from the beginning, as would be evident from the compilation, a keen observer of the library movement and the editorials presented are a representative sample of its outlook and perspective on libraries.

The services rendered by Mr. M.P. Govindaraj, Chief Librarian; Mr. H.R. Mohan, Systems Manager and their colleagues in the compilation of this book need special mention and we are thankful to them. Our thanks are also due to the printers - Allied Publishers Ltd., Madras. A few photographs have been reproduced in this book with due acknowledgement to the agencies concerned.

This being the birth centenary year of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the Father of the Indian Library Movement and with the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions holding its 58th General Conference at New Delhi in Aug-Sep. 1992, we thought the release of this book would befit the occasion. Thanks to the Indian Organising Committee for IFLA General Conference, this has become a reality.
